Men’s Basketball | Son of Medford, ‘The General’ is a student of the game (via Tufts Daily)

How do you win a battle when defeat nears inevitability? Aim for the war.

Announcer Dick Vitale first dubbed legendary college coach Bobby Knight “The General” when Knight took over at Indiana in the early ’70s. His blend of tactical brilliance and loyalty, the fiery temper and military-like precision, elicited comparisons to Patton and Grant. An alternative approach indeed, but it constantly succeeded, even if the frontlines lay littered with broken chairs and soul-scarring obscenities afterward.

Two decades later, Pat Skerry (A ’92) began wearing the badge while attending Tufts. The Medford-born eldest of three sons led his brothers. He led his teams. He led his troops.

Skerry landed his first Div. I head coaching job last year at Towson, knowing full well that a steep climb lay ahead for the General and whatever soldiers stuck around at one of college basketball’s most despondent programs.

The nickname has disappeared over time, fading as he moved from college to college throughout the East coast, scaling the coaching ladder and advancing on his dream. Though men’s basketball coach Bob Sheldon and fellow Jumbos know Pat Skerry as “The General,” his Tigers know him as someone else, someone Skerry has envisioned himself becoming since high school, someone who will hoist Towson out of the cellar and into the national spotlight for the right reasons. They know him as Coach.

The men’s and women’s NESCAC Tournament previews have been cross-posted from the Tufts Daily. Hockey will come.

For now, the links:

Men’s Basketball | Hamilton hoping to get some Lin-sanity in NESCAC playoff matchup vs. Amherst (via Hamilton Spectator)

It’s not every day that the New York Knicks starting point guard walks into Hamilton’s own Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.

It’s not every day that one of the most accomplished basketball players in Hamilton history plays his last game there, either.

Needless to say, Sunday, Feb. 12 was a day of excitement, celebration and triumph for the Hamilton men’s basketball family. After having officially clinched a berth to their first ever NESCAC tournament with a Trinity College loss to Williams on Saturday, the Continentals honored their graduating seniors by handily defeating Bates College in front of an atypically large and energized crowd which included emerging NBA superstar Jeremy Lin. Men’s Basketball | Amherst, Middlebury lead pack of tournament hopefuls (x-post Tufts Daily)

(via Claire Kemp, Tufts Daily)

The men’s basketball team will kick off its NESCAC Tournament bid on Saturday when, for the first time since 2006, Tufts will have the honor of hosting the quarterfinals as the No. 4 seed. No. 1 Amherst, No. 2 Middlebury and No. 3 Wesleyan will also welcome opponents to their home courts as the favorites to advance to next weekend. The fourth through eighth seeds have almost identical split conference records, meaning some close games are likely to ensue — including in Cousens Gym when the Jumbos welcome the No. 5 Bates Bobcats.

While the majority of the teams are evenly-matched, it will be difficult to dethrone the defending NESCAC champion and national semifinalist Panthers, the top-seeded Lord Jeffs or a hot Cardinals squad.

To get you ready, the Daily breaks down the eight tournament hopefuls. Continue reading
