Women’s Basketball | Amherst barely maintained its 36-game winning streak, outlasting Colby 51-50 (via Kennebec Journal)

So close. So agonizingly, unbelievably close.

“This one, I just think it’s a bummer,” Colby coach Julie Veilleux said. “My heart really, really does go out to the team, because they really laid it on the line. They did what they needed to do. For it to boil down the way it did, your heart just goes out to them.”

Just a week or so before teams begin to break for winter recess, so get the constant daily news while you can, only on NESCAC Insider!

Here we go:

The following NESCAC players were named to the D3football.com All-East Region Team:

TE Billy Chapman, Middlebury (1st Team Offense)
DT Kevin Ferber, Amherst (1st Team Defense)
RB Eric Bunker, Amherst (2nd Team Offense)
T Ryan Moores, Middlebury (3rd Team Offense)
LB Walter Fallas, Trinity (3rd Team Defense)

The Williams women’s basketball team is on a roll, and recently cracked the national top 15, writes Jacob Blau of the Williams Record.
Ellery Gould scored a career-high 25 points as Bowdoin avenged two straight losses and set a program record with 66 first-half points in a 99-64 blowout of Husson.
Continuing with the NESCAC community service theme set yesterday, the Bowdoin ice hockey teams are set to host their annual “Skate With the Polar Bears” Food Drive this Saturday.
While the Colby women’s team lost its first game this season, the Mules men lost to Thomas for the second time ever, 81-79, writes Matt DiFilippo of the Kennebec Journal.
Wesleyan guard Shasha Brown added an ECAC Player of the Week award to his haul after taking home NESCAC Player of the Week honors.

Winter break is headed our way, so to get you ready we have another batch of the top news from around the conference for December 5. Plus, a quick reminder that this is the new home of NESCAC Insider, moved from Word Press to the Tufts Daily servers.

Here we go:

Congratulations to Tufts senior ice hockey goalie Scott Barchard, who set the program’s all-time saves record in just under three full seasons with the Jumbos, writes Dan Rathman of the Tufts Daily.
Clayton Spencer, the vice president policy at Harvard, has been named the eighth president of Batest. She will take over July 1.
Williams handed out its annual football awards, including the first-ever Michael Meredith Reily ’64 award for “the player who best embodies the spirit, ideals, and character of the team as defnied by his teammates,” won by senior Dylan Schultz.
No. 7-ranked Williams stretched its winning streak to five games by capturing the Hockenbury Classic with a 70-52 win over Worcester State. Nate Robertson was named the tournament’s MVP after averaging 8 points and 5 assists.

Linking Around the NESCAC | November 20

NCAA finals abound and winter sports are aplenty, so let’s get it started with another edition of Linking Around the NESCAC.

Here we go:

Bowdoin field hockey’s first loss of the season came at a pretty bad time, as Middlebury advanced to the NCAA finals with a 3-0 rout, writes Jorge Bannister of the Maine Sunday Telegram.
Williams, on the other hand, dealt Emory its first loss of the season with a 1-0 victory in 2 OTs to advance to the 2011 NCAA women’s soccer championship game.
Bowdoin battled to a season-opening 3-3 tie versus Williams in a rematch of the 2010-11 final. Chris Roy of the Maine Hockey Journal has that and all the other news in his NESCAC roundup.
New Colby head coach Julie Veilleux won her debut with the Mules in a 79-57 decision over Clark on Saturday in the Brandeis Tournament.
Amherst has some pretty awesome black-and-white pictures from the Lord Jeffs’ 2-0 win over Hamilton in men’s ice hockey on Friday.
Williams’ Chiara Del Piccolo took individual honors at the NCAA XC championships, becoming the first NESCAC individual runner to win since 1995. UW Oshkosh has a set of nice photos here.
