NESCAC Football Signing Day

Ascribing the national spectacle that is “Letter of Intent Day” to Division III athletics is a fruitless exercise. After all, no prospective Div. III athlete can technically “sign” with a school. Scholarships at this level do not exist.

Still, that doesn’t mean that recruits can’t announce their commitments, an event that occurred in waves yesterday.

Local and national websites alike have released the names of various high school athletes who intend — “intend” being the operative word, as nothing is set in stone until they actually enroll — to compete in the NESCAC.

Bates: Mark Riley, TE, Needham (also lacrosse) — Boston Globe All-Scholastic, 72 receptions for 15 touchdowns and 1,266 yards. Led the Rockets into the Division I Super Bowl. For his career, Riley had 125 receptions for 2,115 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Bowdoin: Sam Hodgson, LB, St. Sebastian’s (also lacrosse) — All-ISL
Andrew Murowchick, K, Needham — 5 FG, 46 XP (both led MIAA East Div. I)

Middlebury: Danny Pierce, DB, Needham — All-Bay State League

Tufts: Drew Burnett, QB, Needham — Lost to injury midway through the season, still finished All-Bay State
Corey Burns, LB, Whitman-Hanson
Garrett Ewanouski, LB, Catholic Memorial
Justin Roberts, OL, BC High — Helped lead the Eagles to the Div. I Super Bowl

Dan Barone, QB, Holliston — Tri-Valley League Large MVP had 30 touchdowns, and ran and threw for over 1,000 yards each. He also started in the secondary, was the Panthers’ kick returner and handled kicking duties. Named a Boston Globe Athlete of the Year for Div. 3.
