Mike and Cody; The Middle East; Music

“We’ve been practicing for the past six… days.” Cody Hochheiser, Tufts senior and one-half of party rock duo Mike and Cody was on fire this past Saturday at The Middle East in Cambridge, tuning synthesizers and tweaking microphones between each song with the game face of an alpha wolf. The other half of this twosome, Berklee College of Music grad Mike Okusami riffed on vocals and synths; accompanied by Tufts students Axel Olson (bass), Will Fox (guitar), Louie Zong (drums) and Tyler LeVander (drums), this collective came fully prepared to bring down the joint. The band rocked on to a not-so-modest crowd of fellow musicians, bros, tipsy girls and hipsters (basically, an adequate summation of Tufts’ student population) and by set’s end the dingy back room of The Middle East was, as Cody would say (well, sing), “full of electricity”.

Despite technical difficulties the band opened strong with, appropriately, the first track from their most recent EP “Let’s Go”, a crowd-mover called “I’m Gonna Steal Your Date”. Though the band seemed anxious while the crowd swelled, from the first bar of “Steal” the duo plus five became a veritable ensemble of pure swagger. Cody crooned his vocals with the sex and saunter of Prince while his bandmates played on flawlessly. The focus then switched to Mike for the second song, “Headphones On”, another hit from their EP, backed by Cody on keys and Will Fox on rattle. More =>>
