Tonight is the annual Boston Common Tree Lighting Ceremony, accessible via the Park Street T-stop. People from all over the Greater Boston area will gather at the Commons to watch the lighting of the 45 ft. tree decorated with 52,000 LED lights. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m., with a live broadcast on Channel 5 starting at 7. Once the tree is lit by Mayor Thomas Menino, there will be a pyrotechnic display. The event will also feature performances from New Kid on the Block Joey McIntyre, “American Idol” finalist Siobhan Magnus, Rockapella, the Boston Ballet and saxophonist Grace Kelly, among others.
Prior to the lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m., the Skating Club of Boston will put on a skating show by local skating stars at the Boston Common Frog Pond. U.S. bronze medalist Ross Minor will be present.
Closer to home is Davis Square’s annual Midnight Madness shopping event taking place from 6 p.m. to midnight. Sponsored by The Davis Area Resident/Business Initiative, the event will feature sales and discounts at a number of Davis Square restaurants and retailers. Many of the participating shops will be offering live music, appetizers and drinks. It’s a good time to check out retailers such as Found, Artifaktori, Suneri Boutique, the Boston Shaker and Buffalo Exchange, among others. There will also be a special ZipCar booth set up.
Hungry shoppers will also have plenty of options to refuel. Johnny D’s is offering free admission to shoppers and $1 hot dogs, while Dave’s Fresh Pasta will provide samples and tastings. Other participating food outlets are Kickass Cupcakes and When Pigs Fly.
