Following the loss of his Tufts degree, Lance Armstrong struggles in the job market

Assembly Square has been in the news recently for new developments opportunities, including a potential new soccer field and the fabled addition of an Ikea in Somerville. With a soon arrival of its own Orange Line T  stop, Assembly Square is on the fast track for further gentrification and easier access! But before it gets even more loud and noisy, check out a few of the place’s hidden gems and less obvious haunts, as a pre-finals chill out for yourself!  Assembly Row is coming!

Assembly Square got its name after the Ford Motor assembly plant opened there in 1926. After falling into irrelevance when the plant closed in 1958 and after several other large-scale innovations failed, in the early 1980s the City of Somerville enlisted in a 20-year urban renewal plan. However, a drawn out, 12-year long battle between Somerville government and the large furnishing store IKEA, stalled any further development of the space.
Over $73 million dollars later, Assembly Square is now undergoing a new phase of development, Assembly Row, with an urban renewal plan and goal of transforming Assembly Square into a mixed-use, residential and commercial district. But before the bulldozers knock everything away, take a look at parts of Assembly Square that are off radar.

Somerville Public Library (East Branch)
I can’t stress enough the importance and power of local libraries as a way to get out of the Tufts bubble. Yes, Tisch and Ginn are nearby, and yes, the romantic and Harry Potter-esque appeal of the downtown Boston Pubic Library is strong, but consider spending a day out from under the Medford/Somerville campus’s fluorescent-lit edifices. For a study break or cool-down: grab a children’s book. I suggest anything by Eric Carle or John Steptoe.

Burger Dive

This brand-spanking new restaurant opened less than a week ago, so for something new to your tastebuds and your zipcode, Burger Dive can’t be beat! As the newest and first restaurant of the Assembly Row development, they’re beginning to garner buzz from nearby white collar and blue collar patrons alike. John T., and MBTA employee, services the Wellington bus route, and popped in on Friday to finally sample the wares. “It’s been worth the wait,” John said, biting into the ‘blue burger’. 702 Assembly Square Drive, Somerville, MA 02145

Patsy's Pastry ShopPatsy’s Pastry Shop
We know, you’ve carved a “Mike’s Pastry” category into your monthly budget. But this weekend, try something off the heavily tourist-beaten path! And let’s face it, Mike’s is so freshman fall. Patsy’s, however, is another Italian bakery, family owned, with fresh cream-filled puff pastries and champagne cookies. Patsy’s was founded in the late 1960’s and with unexpectedly low prices, it’s bound to become a local favorite! Don’t let another winter weekend pass without a visit to Patsy’s, and don’t leave without sampling their classic chocolate whoopie pies! 182 Broadway, Somerville, MA, 02145

Any other week, a Sunday afternoon would probably conjure up responsibilities and tasks for the week ahead. However, Veteran’s Day this Monday has afforded Tufts students a 3-day weekend. While you honor our veterans and reflect on their undeniable courage and significance, take some time to venture to Kendall Square, and admire the area’s architectural wonders. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus has no shortage of innovative architectural wonders, including the Great Dome, the Ray and Maria Stata Center (featured in the video below!), and several corporate offices that have embraced a creative flair in office design.

With the wonderful weather imminent, dedicate an afternoon to exploring Kendall without inhibition!

After an illustrious 30 year long career at Tufts, Vice Provost Peggy Newell has left the Hill for the hallowed halls of Harvard, as the university’s first deputy provost.

The new appointment came on the heels of the current Tufts provost, David Harris, settling in to his new role at Tufts. Newell filled the position as ad interim since 2010.

In an interview with the Daily, Newell reflected on her career at Tufts, the duties if the Provost’s Office (admit it, you’re not quite clear on them yourself!), and how the university has changed in the last 30 years. We at the Daily wish Peggy nothing but success and greatness, and thank get fur her instilling commitment to the student and faulty bodies alike.

In a packed Cohen Auditorium on Tuesday night, expert and Certified Sexuality Educator Megan Andelloux, commonly known simply as “Oh Megan” or “the sex lady” by unaware first year students, stood on the stage with a Powerpoint presentation about orgasms and sexual health behind her, a table strewn with sex toys, condoms, and books at her side, and boxes of free “bullet” vibrators waiting in the wings for the evening’s patrons. It was a good night.

The event, “Tufts Vox Presents Oh Megan: Orchestrating Orgasms”, was sponsored by Tufts Vox (Voices For Change), as a workshop for students (and faculty and staff!) to learn about the biological, social, and mental issues surrounding orgasms. After an enlightening presentation filled with research and humor, Megan chatted with the Daily about sexual wellness, body positivity and sex positions, misinformation, Fifty Shades of Grey, and why she does what she does for a living.
